Deepavali Inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

On 10th December 2025, Deepavali was officially inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during the 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee held at the Red Fort, New Delhi.

- Cultural Significance: The festival embodies the universal message of “Tamso Ma Jyotirgamaya” - the transition from darkness to light - symbolising hope, renewal, and harmony across societies.
- Role of the Indian Diaspora: Celebrations across Southeast Asia, Africa, the Gulf, Europe, and the Caribbean demonstrate how the Indian diaspora carries the festival’s spirit globally, strengthening cultural bridges.
- Diverse Practices: Deepavali’s rich practices - lighting diyas, making rangoli, performing rituals, crafting decorations, community gatherings, and intergenerational knowledge-sharing - reflect its enduring vitality and adaptability.
