  • 10 Dec 2025

On 7th December 2025, Majuli began the second edition of the Charaichung Festival, a four-day initiative aimed at restoring and promoting the 392-year-old Royal Bird Sanctuary, Asia’s first protected bird sanctuary established in 1633 by Ahom king Swargadeu Pratap Singha.

  • The festival seeks to revive the nearly defunct Charaichung Sanctuary by drawing attention to its historical significance and encouraging conservation efforts among local communities and visitors.
  • Organised by Majuli Sahitya and local residents, the event aims to place Charaichung on the global tourism map while rejuvenating its bird habitat and promoting awareness of its ecological importance.
  • Majuli, known as one of India’s most significant bird habitats, hosts a rich diversity of aquatic life and nearly 150 species of indigenous and migratory birds, attracting researchers, bird watchers and tourists from around the world.
