Viksit Bharat Rozgar Mission Bill Introduced

On 16 December 2025, the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha to replace the two-decade-old rural employment law.

- Replacement of MGNREGA: The proposed legislation seeks to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which has been in force for nearly 20 years.
- Employment Guarantee: The Bill guarantees 125 days of wage employment per rural household for adult members willing to undertake unskilled manual work.
- Structural Reforms: The new framework aims to address structural weaknesses of the earlier law by improving transparency, accountability, planning, and implementation.
- Rural Economic Strengthening: The Bill focuses on strengthening the rural economy through productive asset creation, higher rural incomes, and improved economic resilience.
- Priority Verticals: Employment and asset creation under the Bill will be organised around four priority areas: water security, core rural infrastructure, livelihood-related infrastructure, and special works to mitigate extreme weather events.
