Government Clarifies Status of Aravallis’ Ecology

- Minister’s Statement: Union Environment Minister clarified that the Supreme Court’s 100-metre ruling on Aravalli hills is being misinterpreted and urged citizens to avoid spreading misinformation.
- Extent of Aravallis: The total area of the Aravalli range is about 1.47 lakh square kilometres, spread across Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.
- Mining Restrictions: Mining is permitted in only 0.19% of the Aravalli range. As per the apex court’s directions, around 90% of the area falls under protected zones, with no relaxations.
- Delhi-Specific Rule: No mining activity is allowed in the Aravalli hills located within Delhi.
- Supreme Court Ruling: The Supreme Court of India accepted the recommendations of a committee of the Ministry of Environment on defining the Aravalli Hill Ranges.
- Revised Definition: Under the accepted definition, hills lower than 100 metres will no longer be recognised as part of the ancient Aravalli hill system.
