On 22nd December 2025, National Mathematics Day is being observed across India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the country’s most influential and globally recognised mathematicians.
- National Mathematics Day is marked across schools, colleges, universities, and research institutions to emphasise the role of mathematics in scientific advancement, innovation, and everyday problem-solving.
- The observance honours the legacy of Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose pioneering work in number theory, infinite series, and mathematical analysis continues to shape modern mathematics worldwide.
- The day was formally instituted by the Government of India in December 2011 to promote interest in mathematics and encourage young minds to pursue the subject.
- December 22 was officially designated as National Mathematics Day in recognition of Ramanujan’s extraordinary intellectual contributions despite limited formal training and resources.
- To further strengthen mathematical education and research, the year 2012 was celebrated nationwide as the National Mathematics Year, giving institutional momentum to learning and innovation in the field.
