On 3rd January 2026, Vice President, Prime Minister, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister paid tributes to freedom fighters Rani Velu Nachiyar and Veerapandiya Kattabomman on their birth anniversaries.

  • Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan described Rani Velu Nachiyar as one of India’s earliest woman freedom fighters, an enduring symbol of women’s strength, leadership and courage.
  • He said she was a visionary ruler who stood firmly against colonial domination, exemplifying valour, strategic acumen and exceptional leadership.
  • The Vice President also hailed Veerapandiya Kattabomman as a valiant son of the soil, whose fearless defiance of colonial oppression became a beacon for India’s freedom movement.
  • Rani Velu Nachiyar is remembered as one of India’s most courageous warriors, who embodied bravery, tactical mastery and the spirit of self-rule.
