On 7th January 2026, Renowned Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr passed away at the age of 70 following a long and serious illness, the Association of Hungarian Film Artists confirmed.

  • Born in 1955 in Pécs, Tarr began his filmmaking journey at just 16 as an amateur filmmaker.
  • He later worked at the Balazs Bela Studio, a key centre for experimental cinema in Hungary.
  • Tarr made his first feature film, The Family Nest (1977), which explored social realities and class struggles.
  • His subsequent films, including The Prefab People (1982) and Damnation (1988), examined themes of human fragility and social decay.
  • He achieved global acclaim with Sátántangó, a seven-and-a-half-hour epic widely regarded as one of the greatest films of the 20th century.
