On 20th February 2026, renowned Bengali writer Mani Sankar Mukhopadhyay, popularly known as Sankar, passed away at the age of 92 in Kolkata.
- Sankar was a Sahitya Akademi award winner and a towering figure in Bengali literature.
- His celebrated novels include Chowringee, Seemabaddha, and Jana Aranya.
- Chowringee, published in 1962, depicted the lives of Kolkata’s elite through Shahjahan Hotel.
- Several of his works were adapted into films, including those directed by Satyajit Ray.
- His debut novel Kato Ajanare was earlier considered for adaptation by Ritwik Ghatak.
- Sankar was known for immortalising Kolkata’s social and cultural landscape through literature.
