Recently, Tamil Nadu planted 20,000 mangrove seedlings along the Buckingham Canal in Chennai.

  • The plantation covered about 20 hectares during 2025–26.
  • The initiative aims to restore coastal ecosystems and enhance climate resilience.
  • Mangroves act as natural bioshields against cyclones and coastal erosion.
  • The project was implemented by the Chennai Forest Division.
  • Financial support was provided by ICICI Bank under its CSR programme.
  • An innovative “fishbone” canal system was developed to maintain tidal saline water flow.
  • The system includes eight main canals, eight feeder canals and 186 distribution channels.
