Union Cabinet Approves Extension of Jal Jeevan Mission

On 11th March 2026, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) till December 2028 with an enhanced outlay to strengthen rural drinking water supply and shift the programme towards a sustainable service-delivery model.

Key Points

  • Enhanced Financial Outlay: The total mission outlay has been increased to Rs.8.69 lakh crore, including Rs.3.59 lakh crore central assistance, up from Rs.2.08 lakh crore approved at the mission’s launch in 2019.
  • Shift to Utility Model: The programme will transition from an infrastructure-driven approach to a citizen-centric utility model ensuring sustainable piped potable water supply in rural areas.
  • Sujalam Bharat Digital Framework: A national digital system will assign each village a unique “Sujal Gaon/Service Area ID” and digitally map the entire drinking water supply chain from source to household tap.
  • Community Participation: Through the “Jal Arpan” initiative, Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs) will participate in commissioning and handover of water supply schemes.
  • Har Ghar Jal Certification: Gram Panchayats can declare “Har Ghar Jal” status only after confirming proper operation and maintenance arrangements.
  • Jal Utsav Initiative: An annual community-led event will be organised to review and maintain local water infrastructure and promote water sustainability.
  • Progress Since Launch: When launched in 2019, only 3.23 crore (17%) rural households had tap water connections. Over 12.56 crore additional households have since been connected.
  • Current Coverage: About 15.80 crore out of 19.36 crore rural households (81.6%) currently have tap water connections.
