Ladakh Approves Creation of Five New Districts

On 27th April 2026, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory.
- The new districts are Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass.
- With this move, Ladakh’s total number of districts increases from 2 to 7.
- Previously, Leh and Kargil were the only districts.
- The decision fulfils a long-standing public demand for better administrative decentralisation.
- It aims to strengthen grassroots governance and improve delivery of public services in remote areas.
- The move was earlier approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2024.
