  • 13 May 2026

On 11th May 2026, India inaugurated the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai under its Chairship.

  • The four-day meeting, being held from May 11-14, brings together representatives from participating countries, industry bodies and civil society groups to discuss responsible and sustainable diamond trade.
  • The discussions focus on strengthening monitoring, compliance and consumer confidence in the global natural diamond value chain.
  • The meeting includes deliberations on monitoring and compliance measures, artisanal and alluvial diamond production, statistical systems and ethically sourced natural diamonds.
  • Participants are also discussing emerging challenges in the diamond industry and collaborative approaches for transparency and responsible sourcing.
  • India’s 2026 Chairship theme is based on the “3Cs”: Credibility, Compliance and Consumer confidence.
  • The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was established following the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56 adopted in 2000 to prevent conflict diamonds (also known as blood diamonds, these are illegally traded to fund conflict in war-torn areas, particularly in central and western Africa) from entering legitimate trade.
  • The Kimberley Process currently includes 60 participants representing 86 countries, with the European Union participating as a single bloc.
