Professor Robert A.F. Thurman Passes Away

On 16th June 2026, Renowned American scholar of Tibetan Buddhism, Robert A. F. Thurman, passed away at the age of 84 in Woodstock, New York.

Thurman was a Padma Shri awardee, a distinguished Buddhist scholar, author, translator, and a longtime friend of the 14th Dalai Lama.
He was the co-founder and President of Tibet House US and also served as President of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies.
Professor Thurman made significant contributions to the global understanding of Tibetan Buddhism through his writings, translations, and academic research.
He is widely known for translating the Vimalakirti Sutra into English from the Tibetan Kagyur.
