SC Recognises Value of Homemakers

  • 19 Jun 2026

In June 2026, the Supreme Court recognised homemakers as "nation builders" and "economic entities" and introduced a new compensation head, 'Loss of Domestic Care', to ensure fair compensation in motor accident claims involving deceased homemakers.

Key Points:

  • Baseline Compensation: A base notional monthly income of ₹30,000 has been prescribed for calculating compensation under the new head.
  • Eligibility Conditions: The compensation applies where:
    • The homemaker contributed to household management.
    • Children lost maternal care and guidance.
    • The spouse or parents lost domestic support.
  • Future Revision: The ₹30,000 benchmark will be revised upward by 10% every three years, in line with the revision of consortium compensation.
  • Additional Benefit for Working Homemakers: If the deceased homemaker was also employed, ₹30,000 will be added to her actual income while calculating compensation.
