'DeepDATA' App for Deep-Sea Fish Documentation

  • 25 Jul 2026

On 23rd July 2026, the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) launched DeepDATA, a mobile application for the digital documentation and biodiversity mapping of India's deep-sea fish species.

  • DeepDATA enables users to access scientifically verified information on deep-sea fish species, including their taxonomy, distinguishing features, distribution, and conservation status.
  • The app was developed under the Deep Ocean Mission with funding from the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • The platform allows students, researchers, fishermen, and the general public to upload photographs and field observations of deep-sea fishes.
  • Every uploaded record is scientifically verified by CMFRI experts before being added to the national digital repository.
  • Verified records will help generate data on the availability, distribution, and occurrence of deep-sea fish species in Indian waters.
