Parichha Dam Is Now A World Heritage Irrigation Structure

On 13th August 2026, the 140-year-old Parichha Dam in Jhansi was recognised as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure (WHIS).

  • The recognition was conferred by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID).
  • The Parichha Weir was built across the Betwa River and became operational in 1886.
  • It is 1,174 metres long and rises 16.8 metres above the riverbed.
  • The weir has 318 steel falling shutters, increasing reservoir capacity to 2,400 million cubic feet.
  • It serves as the headworks of the Betwa Canal System in drought-prone Bundelkhand.
  • The WHIS recognition is given to irrigation structures over 100 years old that remain functional.
