Thiksey Monastery

On 21st August 2026, U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor visited the historic Thiksey Monastery in Ladakh, a prominent Buddhist landmark.

  • The monastery is located 19 km from Leh and is the largest monastery in central Ladakh.
  • Founded in 1433, its distinctive multi-level architecture resembles Tibet’s Potala Palace.
  • The monastery houses ancient Buddhist images, stupas, scrolls and wall paintings.
  • It contains a 15-metre-high Maitreya Buddha statue, installed during the 1980s.
  • The monastery is known for its daily morning prayers and panoramic views of the Indus River.
