NASA Launches Roman Space Telescope to Study the Universe

On 30th August 2026, NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to map the cosmos and investigate dark matter, dark energy and exoplanets.

Key Points

Mission: It will create an unprecedented wide-field map of the universe using infrared observations.
Field of View: Roman’s field of view is over 100 times wider than Hubble’s.
Location: The telescope will operate about 1.5 million km from Earth.
Dark Universe: It will investigate dark matter and dark energy, together comprising about 95% of the universe.
Exoplanets: Roman is expected to discover thousands of exoplanets and study distant planetary systems.
Supernovae: It will observe tens of thousands of supernovae, helping study cosmic expansion.
Complementary Missions: Its observations will complement James Webb, Rubin Observatory and ESA’s Euclid mission.
Data Generation: Roman is expected to generate around 1.3 terabytes of data daily.
