  • 01 Oct 2026

On September 30, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III), which will support the transmission and grid integration of up to 135 GW of renewable energy.

Key Facts

  • Total Outlay: The scheme has a total outlay of Rs. 1,86,405 crore and aims to be established by FY 2032–33.
  • Transmission Capacity: The scheme will strengthen Intra-State Transmission Systems (InSTS) rather than inter-state systems, enabling the evacuation of 135 GW of renewable energy across states and UTs.
  • Battery Storage: A provision of Rs. 50,000 crore has been made for a 50 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
  • Transmission Infrastructure: Rs. 1,36,378 crore will be spent on developing intra-state transmission infrastructure.
  • Central Assistance: The scheme will receive Central Financial Assistance of Rs. 54,082 crore, helping keep transmission charges and ultimately electricity costs lower.
  • Implementation: State Transmission Utilities will serve as the overall implementing agencies; new projects will be developed via the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) model.
  • National Target: GEC-III will assist India in achieving its target of 900 GW of installed non-fossil energy capacity by 2035.
