World Press Freedom Index 2025

The World Press Freedom Index 2025, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in May 2025.

The Index evaluates press freedom in 180 countries by assessing political, legal, economic, socio-cultural, and safety conditions affecting journalism.

Methodology

The index evaluates five key dimensions:

  1. Political Context: Measures political influence on media operations and editorial independence.
  2. Legal Framework: Assesses protections and legal threats to journalism.
  3. Economic Context: Evaluates the financial stability of media outlets and ownership concentration.
  4. Sociocultural Context: Considers societal attitudes and pressures on journalists.
  5. Safety of Journalists: Analyzes physical threats, violence, and impunity for crimes against journalists.
