On 12th April 2024, South Korea navy announced that Japan, and the US conducted joint naval exercises to enhance readiness against North Korean nuclear and missile threats.

  • North Korea has been intensifying its weapons development efforts, including testing solid-fuel hypersonic missiles, prompting concerns over regional security.
  • The exercises focused on anti-submarine warfare drills to enhance responses to North Korean underwater threats, including submarines and submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
  • Held in international waters between South Korea and Japan, the two-day drills involved the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and destroyers from all three nations.
  • The training aimed to enhance the combined capability of the three navies to address North Korean threats, following a joint exercise plan established after last year's three-way summit.
  • Maritime interdiction exercises were conducted to intercept North Korea's illegal transportation of weapons of mass destruction, along with search and rescue training for distressed ships.
