Goa Declared 100% Literate State
- 31 May 2025
On 30th May 2025, on the 39th Statehood Day, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced that Goa has achieved 100% literacy, marking a landmark in the state’s commitment to inclusive and lifelong learning.
- ULLAS, or the New India Literacy Programme, is a centrally sponsored initiative under the National Education Policy 2020, targeting adult learners aged 15 and above who missed formal schooling.
- The programme in Goa focused on functional literacy—including reading, writing, and numeracy—while also covering financial literacy and essential life skills relevant to everyday needs.
- Implementation was carried out through a robust network of schools supported by Resource Adult Trainee Coordinators (RATCs) and volunteers like retired teachers, NSS units, and education trainees.
- The government created multilingual primers in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, and English specifically designed to meet the learning needs of adult learners in the state.
