INS Arnala: First ASW Shallow Water Craft

On 18th June 2025, the Indian Navy commissioned INS Arnala, the country’s first Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

- First in Class: INS Arnala is the first of 16 ASW-SWC vessels to be inducted, significantly boosting coastal defence.
- Symbol of Heritage: Named after the historic Arnala Fort off the Maharashtra coast.
- Indigenous Construction: Designed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata, in collaboration with L&T Shipbuilders, with over 80% indigenous content under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
- Technical Specs: The 77.6-meter-long vessel displaces 1,490 tonnes and is the largest Indian naval ship using a diesel engine-waterjet propulsion system.
- Strategic Impact: Marks a major step in enhancing India’s coastal security and maritime self-reliance in the Indian Ocean Region.
