NSO Releases Report on Agriculture Output (2011–2024)

On 27th June 2025, the National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), released its annual publication, “Statistical Report on Value of Output from Agriculture and Allied Sectors (2011-12 to 2023-24)”, offering in-depth data on various agricultural segments at current and constant prices.
Key Points
- Agriculture GVA Growth:Gross Value Added (GVA) from agriculture and allied sectors at current prices rose by 225%, from Rs. 1,502 thousand crore (2011–12) to Rs. 4,878 thousand crore (2023–24).
- Key Crop Contributors:Cereals and fruits & vegetables together made up 52.5% of crop GVO; paddy and wheat contributed 85% of cereal GVO.
- Top Cereal-Producing States:Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, and Haryana accounted for 53% of cereal GVO.
- Fruit and Vegetable Trends:In 2023–24, banana overtook mango in GVO, and potato remained the leading vegetable.
- Spice Production Leaders:Madhya Pradesh led condiments and spices with a 19.2% share, followed by Karnataka and Gujarat.
- Forestry and Logging Performance:Industrial wood’s share increased sharply from 49.9% to 70.2% within forestry GVO.
- Fishing and Aquaculture Gains:Their share in agricultural GVA rose from 4.2% to 7.0%; marine fish now nearly equal inland fish in contribution. West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh remained major players.
