India Celebrates Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day

On 16th July 2025, India observed Artificial Intelligence (AI) Appreciation Day to mark its growing leadership in the global AI landscape and the transformative impact of AI across the country.

  • AI is transforming key sectors in India such as healthcare, education, agriculture, governance, and industry, from major tech hubs to rural regions.
  • The government’s “AI for All” vision and National Strategy for AI emphasize using AI not only for economic development but also for improving lives, ensuring social inclusion, and promoting equity.
  • India’s AI journey began in the 1960s with early computer science research and took a major step forward in 1986 with the launch of the Knowledge-Based Computer Systems project.
  • In the 1990s, institutions like C-DAC advanced supercomputing and early AI applications, while IT firms like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro began investing in AI by the 2000s.
  • The Digital India initiative launched in 2015 and NITI Aayog’s 2018 strategy on AI provided a strong foundation for scaling AI development nationwide.
