On 16th July 2025, India achieved a major milestone by successfully intercepting and destroying two high-speed aerial unmanned targets using the Akash Prime air defence system in the high-altitude region of Ladakh.

Key Points

  • Akash Prime System: An upgraded variant of the Akash Weapon System, specifically customised for operations above 4,500 metres.
  • Indigenous Technology: Features an indigenously developed Radio Frequency (RF) seeker to improve target acquisition and engagement accuracy.
  • Collaborative Development: Jointly developed by the Indian Army’s Air Defence units, DRDO, BDL, BEL, and other industry partners.
  • Production Trial: The successful firing was part of the “First of Production Model” trials, validating system performance prior to induction.
  • High-Altitude Advantage: Ensures India’s preparedness in challenging frontier regions like Ladakh.
  • Operational Legacy: Builds on the strong performance of Akash systems during Operation Sindoor, where they neutralised hostile drones and aircraft.
