CP Radhakrishnan Elected as India’s Vice President

On 9th September, 2025, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee C.P. Radhakrishnan was elected as the Vice President of India, defeating INDIA bloc candidate Justice B. Sudershan Reddy in a closely contested election.

  • Radhakrishnan secured a clear victory with 452 first-preference votes against Justice Reddy’s 300, while 15 votes were declared invalid, according to the official announcement by Rajya Sabha General Secretary P.C. Mody.
  • The elections recorded a high turnout of 98.20 percent, with 767 Members of Parliament casting their vote out of the 781 eligible; thirteen MPs abstained, including seven from the Biju Janata Dal, four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, one from Shiromani Akali Dal, and one independent MP.
  • The Vice President’s office had been vacant since 21st July, following the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar due to health reasons, making this election a significant moment for India’s political and parliamentary landscape.
