UIDAI Waives Biometric Update Fee for Children
- 06 Oct 2025
On 4th October 2025, UIDAI announced a full waiver of charges for Aadhaar Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBU-1) for children aged 7 to 15, benefiting nearly six crore youngsters nationwide.
- The waiver allows parents and guardians to update their children’s Aadhaar biometrics free of cost for one year, making the process more accessible and convenient.
- Children below five are enrolled in Aadhaar using demographic details and a photograph, while fingerprints and iris scans are captured only during the first Mandatory Biometric Update at age five.
- A second Mandatory Biometric Update is required when a child turns 15, ensuring that Aadhaar data remains accurate and up-to-date throughout their growth.
- Previously, UIDAI charged ₹125 for biometric updates for children aged seven and above, which has now been completely waived under the new policy.
- The new rule effectively makes all Aadhaar biometric updates for children aged 5 to 17 free of cost, simplifying the process for families and reducing financial burden.
- UIDAI highlighted that timely updates will ensure uninterrupted access to Aadhaar-linked services, including school admissions, entrance exams, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes.
