Railways Reduces Bulk Cement Freight Charges
- 21 Nov 2025
On 18th November 2025, the Ministry of Railways unveiled a major rationalization of freight rates for bulk cement transported in containers and introduced a new policy for bulk cement terminals.
Key Points
- Rationalized Freight Rates: The Railways has removed earlier distance and weight slabs. Freight is now charged at a flat rate of ₹0.90 per tonne per kilometre, calculated using the actual Gross Tonne Kilometre (GTKM).
- Affordable Housing Support: The new pricing structure will reduce the overall cost of cement, directly supporting families building homes and enhancing affordability.
- Tank Containers for Seamless Logistics: Tank containers, designed under “Make in India,” provide an end-to-end, pollution-free logistics solution.
- Rail Infrastructure Expansion: India is now the world’s second-largest freight carrier, surpassing the USA. Rail network expansion has increased from 4 km/day (2004–14) to 12–14 km/day.
