National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance 2.0

On 18th November 2025, Union Health Minister launched the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (NAP-AMR) 2.0, a strategic roadmap for 2025–29 aimed at strengthening India’s response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

  • AMR: A Major Public Health Threat: The Minister emphasized that antimicrobial resistance is a critical public health challenge that requires collective, multisectoral action.
  • Need for Corrective Measures: Overuse and misuse of antibiotics have become widespread, increasing the urgency for regulatory and behavioural reforms across human, animal, and environmental health sectors.
  • Objectives of NAP-AMR 2.0: The updated plan addresses gaps in the first action plan (2017–21) and focuses on:
    • stronger ownership by all ministries and sectors
    • improved inter-sectoral coordination
    • enhanced participation of private healthcare and industry stakeholders
  • Key Strategies Under the Plan: NAP-AMR 2.0 will prioritize:
    • strengthening awareness, education, and training
    • enhancing laboratory capacity for AMR detection
    • improving infection prevention and control in healthcare facilities
