India’s First Fully Paperless Court System

  • 10 Jan 2026

In January 2026, Kalpetta judicial district in Kerala’s Wayanad became the first district in India to function as a completely paperless court system, marking a major milestone in judicial digitisation.

  • All stages of judicial functioning, from e-filing of cases to delivery of final judgments, will now be conducted entirely in digital mode across district courts.
  • The system covers pre-trial proceedings, evidence recording, interlocutory applications and adjudication, eliminating the use of physical files.
  • AI-based judicial assistance tools generate structured case summaries from digital records, helping judges quickly understand factual and procedural backgrounds.
  • Interactive Q&A features, digital annotation tools, and voice-to-text technology enable efficient note-taking, witness deposition recording and judicial dictation.
  • Orders and judgments are authenticated using secure digital signatures, ensuring legal validity, integrity and authenticity.
  • The entire platform has been developed in-house by the Kerala High Court, addressing data reliability and security concerns.
