India’s Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework

  • 27 Jan 2026

On 22nd January 2026, Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan released India’s Military Quantum Mission Policy Framework, marking a decisive shift towards integrating quantum technologies into military planning, doctrine, and operational capability.

  • It aims to integrate the four pillars of Quantum technologies (Quantum Communication, Quantum Computing, Quantum Sensing & Metrology, and Quantum Materials & Devices) into the Tri-Services.
  • This integration will empower them to prepare for the future battlefield and achieve technological dominance in the rapidly evolving world.

Key Points

  • Why Quantum Matters in Modern Warfare: Military advantage is increasingly shaped by information control, secure communication, precision sensing, and rapid decision-making, often before forces engage on the battlefield.
  • Changing Nature of Military Power: Traditional dominance based on platforms such as fighter jets, warships, and missiles is no longer sufficient. Quantum technologies influence what can be detected, what can be hidden, and how quickly actions can be taken.
  • Global Context:China integrates quantum technologies into its concept of “intelligentised warfare.”
    • The United States treats quantum as a strategic enabler under its National Quantum Initiative, backed by long-term funding, academia, and industry.
    • Both view quantum superiority as critical for future conflicts.
  • India’s Strategic Imperative: India operates in contested land corridors, border zones, and critical sea lanes, where small gains in detection, secure communication, or response time can have disproportionate strategic impact.
  • Purpose of the Framework: The policy serves as both a strategic guide and an action plan to ensure quantum technologies become operational military assets, not limited to laboratories or pilot projects.
  • Alignment with National Goals: The framework is aligned with the Cabinet-approved National Quantum Mission (NQM), positioning the Armed Forces as active partners in India’s national quantum ecosystem.
