On 18th February 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) unveiled VoicERA, an open-source, end-to-end Voice AI stack, at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 to strengthen multilingual Digital Public Infrastructure.

Key Points

  • The initiative was led by the Digital India BHASHINI Division in collaboration with EkStep Foundation, IIIT Bengaluru, Centre for Open Source Software and AI4Bharat.
  • VoicERA has been deployed on the BHASHINI National Language Infrastructure, creating a national execution layer for multilingual Voice and Language AI.
  • The platform is open, modular, interoperable and cloud-deployable, with on-premise capability for secure and scalable use.
  • It expands BHASHINI’s capabilities beyond translation to include real-time speech systems, conversational AI and multilingual telephony at population scale.
  • Government departments can deploy voice-enabled citizen services in areas such as agriculture advisories, education, grievance redressal and scheme access.
  • The architecture aims to reduce duplication of effort, prevent vendor lock-in and accelerate inclusive voice-based digital services.
