On 19th February 2026, actor Eric Dane passed away at the age of 53 following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

  • Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in 2025 and in his final months, he became an advocate for ALS awareness and research.
  • He was best known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan (McSteamy) in Grey's Anatomy.
  • He also portrayed Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria and appeared in NBC’s Brilliant Minds.
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, which control voluntary muscle movements.
  • As these nerve cells degenerate, patients experience increasing muscle weakness, difficulty in speaking and swallowing, paralysis, and eventually respiratory failure.
