India Abstains in UNGA Vote on Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire

On 24th February 2026, India abstained in the United Nations General Assembly on a draft resolution demanding an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

- Resolution Adopted: The draft resolution titled “Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine” was adopted by the 193-member UN General Assembly with 107 votes in favour, 12 against and 51 abstentions.
- India Among Abstaining Nations: India was one of the 51 countries that abstained, along with nations including Brazil, China, South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, UAE and the United States.
- Ceasefire Call: The resolution urged an immediate, comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire and emphasised achieving a just and lasting peace in line with international law and the UN Charter.
- Support For Ukraine’s Sovereignty: It reaffirmed commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
- Humanitarian Concerns Highlighted: The resolution expressed grave concern over continued attacks on civilians, civilian infrastructure and critical energy facilities, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation.
- Confidence-Building Measures: It called for a full exchange of prisoners of war, release of unlawfully detained persons and return of forcibly transferred civilians, including children.
