Central Facility for Recombinant Cells and Sensors

On 1st March 2026, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated the “Central Facility for Recombinant Cells and Sensors” at BRIC-Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (BRIC-RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram.

  • The facility has been developed by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) at a cost of approximately ₹60 crore.
  • It is expected to strengthen drug discovery, medical research and agricultural genomics in India.
  • The facility houses engineered recombinant cells and advanced screening systems to accelerate target-specific drug discovery.
  • It will serve academia, industry and healthcare innovators nationwide, enabling faster translation of laboratory research into therapeutics.
  • A dedicated Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) facility was also announced at BRIC-RGCB, with a total DBT investment of ₹80 crore in two phases.
  • The GMP facility will support pre-commercial production of biologics and advanced cell-based therapies, including CAR-T therapy.
