On 7th March 2026, the Maharashtra government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with three Finnish companies to modernise Sassoon Dock in Mumbai.

  • The agreement was signed by the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation with Finland-based companies Helvar, Mirasis and River Recycle.
  • Sassoon Dock currently has around 1,560 registered mechanised fishing boats and produces about 50,000-60,000 metric tonnes of fish annually.
  • The dock is a key economic hub for Mumbai’s fishing community and an important fisheries centre in the state.
  • Recent infrastructure works include construction of net-mending sheds, workshops, underground water tanks, pipelines, pump houses and protective walls.
  • Renovation of public facilities is underway along with development of ice plants, strengthening of jetty walls, fish workers’ restrooms and a modern auction hall.
  • The partnership with Finnish companies will focus on improved waste management and recycling of plastic waste and discarded fishing nets.
  • It will also strengthen the net repair system through training and capacity building for fishing communities.
  • The initiative aims to make the dock more efficient, sustainable and environmentally responsible.
