India Launches First Barrier-less Tolling System

On 1st May 2026, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launched India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system in Gujarat.
- The system has been implemented at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza on the Surat-Bharuch section of NH-48.
- It enables seamless toll collection without vehicles stopping.
- The technology uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag.
- The initiative aims to reduce travel time, traffic congestion, and fuel consumption.
- It is expected to lower vehicular emissions and improve highway efficiency.
- The system minimises human intervention and enhances transparency in toll operations.
- The move marks a major step in digitising India’s tolling ecosystem.
- It supports ease of living and faster logistics movement across the country.
