India & Netherlands to Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

On 16-17 May 2026, India and the Netherlands agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, semiconductors, clean energy, and maritime connectivity.

Key Points

Strategic Partnership: Both countries adopted a Strategic Partnership Roadmap covering trade, defence, AI, semiconductors, renewable energy, water management, and education.
UNSC Reform: The Netherlands supported India’s permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council.
Indo-Pacific Cooperation: The Netherlands joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and will co-lead the Capacity Building pillar.
Semiconductor Collaboration: Both countries signed agreements on semiconductors and emerging technologies involving ASML, NXP Semiconductors, and Tata Electronics.
Green Energy Partnership: India and the Netherlands launched a roadmap on green hydrogen cooperation and green shipping initiatives.
Defence and Security: Cooperation will expand in maritime security, cyber security, counterterrorism, and defence industry collaboration.
Water and Agriculture: The partnership includes cooperation on river management, climate-resilient water systems, dairy, horticulture, and food processing.
