New Tiger Moth Genus Discovered

In June 2026, researchers discovered a new genus and species of tiger moth, named Antaram idukki, from the Idukki district of Kerala in the southern Western Ghats.

  • The discovery was published in the peer-reviewed Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society.
  • The newly discovered species belongs to the tiger moth subfamily Arctiinae under the family Erebidae.
  • The new genus, Antaram (a Sanskrit word meaning “difference”), represents a previously unknown evolutionary lineage and is currently known only from Idukki.
  • The genus is distinguished from related tiger moth genera by a unique combination of external and genital morphological characteristics.
