Centre Announces Film Sector Reforms

On 30th June 2026, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced two major initiatives to strengthen India's film industry, enhance its global competitiveness and promote the expansion of cinema infrastructure.

  • High-Level Study Group: The Centre has constituted a high-level Study Group under the chairmanship of Prasoon Joshi to examine opportunities and challenges facing the Indian film industry.
  • Terms of Reference: The committee will recommend measures to improve the global competitiveness of Indian cinema, promote the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and virtual production, improve access to finance, and suggest a long-term policy framework for the sector.
  • Model State Cinema Regulations: The Ministry has prepared Model State Cinema Regulations to simplify approval procedures and encourage the establishment of more cinema halls, particularly in small towns and rural areas.
  • Objective: The model regulations aim to create a uniform and investment-friendly regulatory framework for cinema infrastructure across states.
