In July 2026, scientists developed a borophene-based bio-lubricant that significantly reduces friction and wear in machinery, improving energy efficiency and supporting sustainable industrial applications.

- Key Findings: Adding 0.1% borophene by weight to castor oil reduced friction by around 42% compared to pure castor oil while improving wear resistance and load-bearing capacity.
- Working Mechanism: Borophene disperses uniformly in castor oil and forms a protective tribofilm on contact surfaces, reducing shear stress and minimising wear.
