Borophene-Based Bio-Lubricant Developed
- 23 Jul 2026
In July 2026, scientists developed a borophene-based bio-lubricant that significantly reduces friction and wear in machinery, improving energy efficiency and supporting sustainable industrial applications.
Key Points
- Key Findings: Adding 0.1% borophene by weight to castor oil reduced friction by around 42% compared to pure castor oil while improving wear resistance and load-bearing capacity.
- Working Mechanism: Borophene disperses uniformly in castor oil and forms a protective tribofilm on contact surfaces, reducing shear stress and minimising wear.
- Significance: The innovation offers an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional lubricants by reducing energy loss, improving machine efficiency, extending equipment life and lowering maintenance costs.
