Nauru

  • 04 Aug 2026

In August 2026, the Pacific Island nation of Nauru officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero, restoring the traditional name used in the national language to better reflect the country's cultural identity and heritage.

  • The international country code will change from NRU to NRO, while the people will now be known as dei-Naoero instead of Nauruan.
  • Located in the South Pacific Ocean, it is the world's third-smallest country by population, after Tuvalu and Vatican City.
  • It became independent in 1968 after being administered by Australia following German colonial rule.
