Glaw Lake Becomes 101st Ramsar Site

On 3rd August 2026, India added Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh to the list of Ramsar Sites, taking the country’s total number of wetlands of international importance to 101.

Key Points

Location: The freshwater lake is located within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in the Eastern Himalayas.
Ecological Importance: The wetland and its catchment support over 150 tree species and 49 orchid species, making it an important biodiversity hotspot.
Significance: The Ramsar designation will strengthen wetland conservation, biodiversity protection and sustainable management of natural resources.
India’s Progress: India’s Ramsar network has expanded from 26 sites in 2014 to 101 sites at present.
