IIT Patna Develops Hybrid Magneto-Rheometer

In August 2026, scientists at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna developed a hybrid magneto-rheometer to accurately evaluate magnetorheological (MR) fluids, enabling better research and development of smart materials for industrial and healthcare applications.

- Purpose: The hybrid magneto-rheometer measures the rheological (flow and deformation) and tribological (friction and wear) properties of MR fluids under combined compression and shear.
- Key Innovation: It generates a constant high-strength magnetic field using comparatively low electrical current, enabling more accurate testing under real-world operating conditions.
- Applications: The technology can improve the performance of brakes, clutches, shock absorbers, dampers, actuators, vibration control systems and medical devices.
- Wider Significance: The instrument can also be used to study viscoelastic materials used in polymers, pharmaceuticals, food processing, cosmetics and petrochemicals.
