Consumer Protection Rules Amended for E-Commerce

On 10th September 2026, the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, amended the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 through the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) (Amendment) Rules, 2026, with the objective of strengthening consumer protection while facilitating a transparent and balanced regulatory framework for the e-commerce sector.

  • Price Transparency: Platforms must disclose both reduced and prior prices when announcing discounts.
  • Prior Price: It means the lowest price offered during the preceding 30 days.
  • Search Manipulation: E-commerce entities cannot manipulate search results to mislead consumers.
  • Sponsored Listings: The amendments tighten transparency requirements around sponsored listings.
  • Dark Patterns: The rules strengthen safeguards against deceptive digital interface practices.
  • Imported Goods: Platforms must disclose importer details and country of origin.
  • Grievance Redressal: E-commerce entities must join the convergence process of the National Consumer Helpline.
  • Complaint Copy: Grievance officers must provide complainants a copy of their recorded complaint.
  • Effective Date: The amended rules will come into force from 1 January 2027.
  • Consumer-Centric Ecosystem: The amendments seek greater accountability and transparency in digital marketplaces.
