Mizoram Becomes India’s First Fully Literate State
- 21 May 2025
On 20th May 2025, Mizoram was officially declared India’s first fully literate state, achieving a literacy rate of 98.20% under the ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram.
- Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced the achievement during a special ceremony at Mizoram University, attended by Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary and other top officials.
- Mizoram, already among the top states in literacy, intensified its efforts through a state-wide door-to-door survey in 2023, identifying and educating over 1,600 non-literate individuals.
- The state's success surpasses the Ministry of Education’s benchmark of 95% for full literacy, as confirmed by the 2023–24 Population Foundational Literacy Survey (PFLS).
- The literacy drive was powered by 292 volunteer teachers—including students, educators, and officials—who worked with a strong sense of duty and community pride.
- The initiative was implemented under ULLAS, a centrally sponsored adult education programme aligned with NEP 2020, focusing on foundational literacy, life skills, and continuing education.
