On 23rd July, 2025, India celebrates National Broadcasting Day, commemorating the country’s first-ever radio broadcast in 1927 from Bombay under the Indian Broadcasting Company.

  • The first radio broadcast in India went on air on July 23, 1927, from the Bombay Station under the Indian Broadcasting Company, marking the beginning of a new era in mass communication.
  • On June 8, 1936, the Indian State Broadcasting Service was renamed All India Radio (AIR), reflecting its expanding role as a national broadcaster.
  • Radio played a vital role during India’s freedom struggle by serving as a powerful platform for spreading awareness, unifying voices, and delivering news in real time across regions.
  • Post-independence, AIR became instrumental in promoting national development through content focused on education, health, agriculture, and social awareness, especially in rural and remote areas.
  • In 1956, the national broadcaster adopted the name AKASHVANI, which means “voice from the sky,” aligning its identity with Indian linguistic and cultural heritage.
  • The Vividh Bharati Service was launched in 1957 as a popular entertainment platform, mainly featuring Hindi film music, and quickly became a household favorite across the country.
