IPPB Rolls Out Aadhaar-Based Face Authentication

  • 05 Aug 2025

On 1st August 2025, the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) launched Aadhaar-based face authentication across India to simplify and secure banking services for customers facing challenges with traditional biometric or OTP-based verification, especially the elderly and differently-abled.

Key Points

  • Inclusive Access: The new system enables banking transactions using facial recognition, eliminating the need for fingerprints or OTPs, thereby enhancing accessibility for people with worn-out fingerprints or limited digital access.
  • Technology Framework: Developed under UIDAI’s framework, the face authentication feature supports services like account opening, balance inquiries, fund transfers, and utility payments.
  • Enhanced Safety: The contactless authentication method is particularly valuable during health crises, offering a safer alternative to touch-based systems.
  • Alignment with Government Missions: The rollout supports the objectives of Digital India and the Financial Inclusion mission, aiming to bridge the urban-rural banking divide.
  • Wide Reach: Established in 2018 under the Department of Posts, IPPB operates via 1.65 lakh post offices and over 3 lakh postal employees, serving more than 11 crore customers in 5.57 lakh towns and villages.
