Lok Sabha Speaker Leads Indian Delegation to Barbados

On 10th October 2025, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla led the Indian Parliamentary Delegation (IPD) on a formal visit to the National Assembly of Barbados, coinciding with the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Bridgetown, highlighting a milestone in India’s parliamentary diplomacy.

  • During the visit, Birla viewed the historic Speaker’s Chair in the Barbados Parliament, a gift from India in 1966, crafted from Indian teakwood by twelve artisans, bearing the inscription “From the People of India to the People of Barbados,” symbolizing enduring friendship between the two nations.
  • Speaker described the chair as a “living example of India-Barbados friendship” and highlighted shared democratic traditions, parliamentary systems, and cultural values, while both sides agreed to explore cooperation in education, renewable energy, culture, and parliamentary exchanges.
